Mental Health: Why We As LGBTQIA Shouldn't Shy Away

Common Mental Health Problems

As a member of the LGBT community, it's very common to experience mental illness or feel down for a while. After all, we constantly deal with rejection and harsh judgement by others who are in no position to judge someone in the first place. Feelings of being misunderstood and alone can lead to mental disorders such as depression and anxiety.


How can I tell if I'm suffering from a mental illness or if I'm just feeling down?

When in doubt, look for the following major symptoms of the most common mental disorders in the LGBT community:


Depression: thoughts of suicide, isolating yourself, feeling hopeless, crying spells, and insomnia.

Anxiety: insomnia, being scared to leave the house, feeling nervous all the time, scared of talking to people in fear you'll be judged, and panic attacks.


If you find yourself experiencing the above symptoms, please talk to a doctor or a therapist. They are trained for these problems as well as supporting the LGBT community. Don't be afraid to ask for help.


Learning to Love Yourself

At the end of the day, you're the one who has to live with yourself for the rest of your life, so why not fall in love with who you are? Being different is actually great. Everyone is always looking for that one person that broke free from the norm to speak up and start something new so that they can do the same. Build your self-esteem up by making a list of everything that you love about yourself. If you can become your own best friend, words won't even touch you anymore. You'll feel happy and loved every single day.


If you can learn to love yourself, you'll never have to worry about the awful feeling of being judged again because it wont even phase you anymore. When you believe in yourself, you can get through anything. Set challenges for yourself everyday to keep discovering new parts of yourself and become the person you're meant to be. Every life matters.


We need to embrace our true selves. That means if we are truly LGBTQIA then we need to embrace that and live by that. Never have shame for being yourself. The worst shame is trying to be someone you're not.

Taking Control of your Life

Take the initiative to do what needs to be done and stand up for yourself. If you're not happy with how your life is going, then change it. If you're not happy with how you're treated, then start a movement! Be the change you wish to see in the world. We are in charge of our own destinies. Don't be afraid to stand alone and take a stand. Fight for what you believe in and never give up! It’s up to us to end LGBT discrimination together and take control of our lives so we can master our mind and stay healthy. The power is in your hands.
